CAMP!2 is our “sequel” to Camp! Vacation Bible School.

If you are already familiar with CAMP! as a VBS curriculum than you already are pretty familiar with the inner-workings of CAMP!2. However, there are a few notable differences.

For instance, the Nature Walk and Storytime Clearing have been combined into one modular station. The puppet character “Beez” is also new. She’s whip smart, on point, and maybe a little passive aggressive. You’ll love her!
The name of the Camp: Camp Aladaiki. (As in: “We are going to eat Aladaiki snacks today!”).
The theme at Camp: God is Always Near.

At Camp Aladaiki campers are treated with a series of messages over the course of 5 days that emphasize very important lessons that will matter for the rest of their lives.

They are: God is always near…
“When Good Things Are Happening”
“When Bad Things Happen”
“When I Am Afraid”
“When I Need Help”
“When Nothing Is Happening.”

The writers of CAMP!2 make it very clear that nothing can separate us from the love of God. CAMP!2 addresses some of the biggest things in our lives that can distract us from God, question God’s whereabouts in certain situations, or simply allow us to forget that God is really in our lives – all the time!

What were we thinking?

EDITORS NOTE: It might appear at first glance to be a pretty lighthearted or overly simplistic theme. When any Christian takes a moment to really evaluate their own spiritual challenges and personal struggles, one rarely finds a history of safe refuge in the commandments, the beatitudes, the fruit of the spirit, the flood story or the creation story, prophecy, or even an understanding of redemption at the cross or Christ’s outpouring of grace.

No, the thing that can (and most often does) really comfort someone is God Himself. It seems like the single most insidious struggle a Christian can deal with that also has the most potential to shake one’s foundation and tug at one’s conscious is the quiet little doubt: Is God REALLY here?

So CAMP! 2 walks the campers through a series of applications at each station, at each meeting and during each fun-filled activity to reinforce the idea that God is ALWAYS near. Simple? Not really.

Missionaries to polytheistic cultures who take a serious and methodical approach to sharing truths about Christ’s actions on the cross also know this. Before some cultures can come to an understanding of God’s grace (as expressed through Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection), there needs to be a mono-theistic foundation laid first. In other words, there is a reason that the Old Testament comes first. Adding Jesus to a pantheon of other gods is not ideal. A monotheistic groundwork must be laid. The understanding that there is a single creator who does not change must be understood. Cultures the world over have gods and demigods who come and go, pop up in certain situations, are non-existent in certain places, emotionally or physically absent during times of duress, and are put away or are out of site during certain months and are brought out for special occasions. It’s no wonder a solid foundation is so important. It doesn’t exist anywhere else! Adding another “god” to a list of ever-changing gods is poor strategy for outreach and poor theology in practice.

Even Christians get caught up in scriptures that are easy to remember, but easy to misapply to suggest that God might be inconsistent:

God is with us where two are more are gathered -
“But what if I am alone?”
God exists in the light -
“But what about when it’s dark and scary?”
God loves a cheerful giver -
“But what about my cranky grandpa?”

God is ALWAYS near. In good times, bad times, when we least think of Him, when we most fear His absence, when we a gasping for help. Unchanging, unflinching, immovable, and unable to love us any less. We would all be wise to never doubt these things. It’s our goal to do our very best to teach every camper at Camp Aladaiki that God is consistently, fundamentally NEAR. As a result we believe this is our way of pouring a solid foundation that every future lesson will be built upon.

Features

Where Aladaiki Campers have Aladaiki fun!

Every day at Camp Aladaiki consists of these elements:

Assembly – Where all campers gather together and sit in groupings of “cabins”, sing original (and all new) songs, and finally receive the day’s theme and instructions for the day’s events with the help of the Camp Director, Kody and Beez!
Cabins dismiss from Assembly and enter into several rotating stations.

Stations are known as:
Arts and Crafts Lodge – Where campers make Aladaiki crafts!
Recreation Field – Where campers play Aladaiki games!
Nature Walk – Where campers go for a hike and watch a Bible story puppet show!
Dining Hall – Where campers make and eat Aladaiki snacks!

Each station is designed to last for 25 minutes and includes extensive instructions for camp staff to teach lesson’s pertaining to the day’s theme.
After cabins have explored all four station areas they arrive at The Council Fire.

Council Fire includes a lot of activities:
Kody and Beez kicking off the fun
Muskrat Cabin Players performing a skit
Poison Ivy Itch & Scratch Dancers leading sing-alongs
Groundskeeper sharing a poignant theme wrap-up
Camp Director dismissing the campers

5 complete days of activities are included with each purchase of camp. Its designed for a VBS, but can easily be adapted for Sunday School, 5 day clubs, or missions trips with structured kid’s activities. CAMP! 2 comes complete with 8 CDs.

CD 1 includes:
•Backing tracks with vocals of original Camp!2 Songs
•Kody & Beez dialog for Assembly and Council fire
•One pre-recorded audio promo designed to announce VBS registration (featuring Kody and Beez)
•One pre-recorded audio promo to help recruit volunteers for VBS (featuring Kody and Beez)

CD 2 includes:
•5 Pre-recorded Bible story puppet shows for the Nature Walk station
•Pre-recorded introductions and summations with Kody and Beez for each of the 5 Bible stories
4 puppeteers, 1 bear puppet, 1 bee puppet, 4 male puppets and 2 female puppets are needed to perform all of the puppets in CAMP! 2

CDs 3, 4, 5 & 6 include digital manuals for your station leaders
CD 7 has digital scripts and instruction manuals for your performance staff
CD 8 is the Director manual

As always, print as many copies of the manuals, instructions and scripts from the CDs as you like. Of course the entire VBS is written to be modular. Add more if you like, take out if you want, shorten if you wish, move things around! It’s all up to you. CAMP!2 was designed and written to make adjustments as easy as possible. HOWEVER: We highly recommend using puppeteers and Kody and Beez. In our tests, we have seen that even the lousiest puppetry that features Kody and Beez makes the curriculum exciting and much more entertaining for Campers. At the very least, we hope you have 2 puppeteers and a bear puppet and a bee puppet. Any other puppet parts can be removed or replaced, but Kody and Beez are integral to the overall “fun” of Camp Aladaiki.

DON’T HAVE ENOUGH PUPPETEERS? This might not be the VBS for you. However, if you wish you had puppeteers, but do not have enough (4), or not enough puppets (8) to do the complete Bible stories in the Nature Walk station you can skip that part. We have written other ideas to use the time during Nature Walk creatively. No problem.
